The MHSIP Policy Group

In 1976, the National Institute of Mental Health initiated the Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program (MHSIP) "to continue and expand the collaborative relationship with the states and to evolve data standards that reflected current developments in mental health services" (Manderscheid and Henderson, 1995). At that time, an ad hoc advisory group was established to provide policy direction for MHSIP.

In the years since, a number of task forces and work groups have been established to focus attention and energy on specific data standard issues: expansion of the work on minimum data standards that led to the NIMH publication Data Standards for Mental Health Decision Support Systems (FN-10), development of data standards for children s services, guidelines for developing performance indicators and, most recently, publication of a Consumer-Oriented Mental Health Report Card. Work on other data standard development projects continues. In addition, the representativeness of the Policy Group has broadened to include service recipients, advocates, and other federal agencies and provider groups concerned with services for persons with mental illness (see Operation Guidelines).

This website is a product of MHSIP Policy Group efforts to share information about mental health data standards to improve the utility of mental health information for all those who seek "to make rational changes based on good, data-based information" (FN-10).
